Book Review: Surf Site Tin Type by Joni Sternbach

JS.Surf.Cover_HRWe are absolutely in love with Joni Sternbach’s one-of-a-kind photographs featured in her book, Surf Site Tin Type. The book features romantic images of surfers posing beachside. The tintype process evokes an ethereal other-worldliness reminiscent of sepia-faded surf photographs from the 1960s. The Brooklyn-based photographer traveled the world, creating tintype portraits of contemporary surfers using the nineteenth-century wet-plate collodion process. Some of the surfer girls featured in the book include Holly Beck, Kassia Meador, Lakey Peterson, Mary Osborne, and Linda Benson; noted photo critic and historian Lyle Rexer, curator April M. Watson, Chris Malloy, and Johnny Abegg lend their words to the collection. Surf Site Tin Type would make a great gift for the surfer in your life, especially if that surfer is you.
